The ideal amount of matcha to drink each day to enjoy its benefits is 2 to 3 cups.
The recommended daily dose of matcha
To enjoy the benefits of matcha without overdoing it, we recommend drinking 2 to 3 cups a day. That works out to 3 to 6 grams of matcha powder, depending on how you dose your drink. For a traditional preparation, you use 1 to 2 grams of powder per cup, or in a matcha glass for an iced latte.
You can measure it precisely in several ways:
- With a traditional matcha scoop (chashaku), which holds about 1 gram
- With a standard teaspoon which holds roughly 1 to 2 grams
- With a kitchen scale for a precise measurement
This recommendation of 2 to 3 cups a day is based on matcha's caffeine content and on the guidelines (400mg for an adult, 200mg for a pregnant woman) from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

Matcha contains caffeine, which is called theine when it's found in tea. A cup of matcha is estimated to contain around 70 mg of caffeine, less than a cup of coffee (which has between 80 and 120 mg) but more than a cup of regular green tea (about 30 mg).
This higher content is explained by the fact that matcha is consumed in its entirety: you ingest the whole leaf in powder form, unlike traditional tea where only the soluble compounds are extracted during steeping.
| Drink | Average caffeine content | Recommended cups per day |
|---|---|---|
| Matcha | 70 mg/cup | 2 to 3 |
| Coffee | 80-120 mg/cup | 3 to 4 |
| Green tea | 30 mg/cup | 5 to 6 |
