This traditional Japanese whisk is essential for properly mixing the powder with hot water and creating that iconic green foam. It works just as well for a hot matcha as for an iced version (with a little more energy 💪).

Using a bamboo matcha whisk - Before / After

1. Dip the chasen in hot water for a few seconds to soften the prongs.
2. Add 1 to 2 g of sifted matcha to your bowl with 60 to 80 ml of hot water (70-80 °C).
3. Whisk in an M or W shape with quick movements for 15 to 20 seconds.
4. Stop once a fine, even foam has formed on the surface.
5. Rinse the whisk with clean water, let it air-dry on a suitable stand.

Matcha Whisk: how does the first use go?

A new bamboo chasen / matcha whisk requires a simple but essential preparation:

• Soak the prongs: Dip the whisk in a bowl of hot (not boiling) water for 1 to 2 minutes. This softens the prongs and keeps them from breaking during use.
• Inspect the fibers: Check that no splinter or loose prong remains in the water. If needed, shake gently to remove residue.
• Do not use soap: Bamboo is porous. A simple rinse with clean water is enough to clean it, even before the first use.
